A record, not a solution

Every finished piece is a small defeat.

I don't think a piece like this is ever really about arriving at beauty. What I'm actually chasing (objet petit a, in Lacan's terms) isn't a real target. It's an impossible one, a lack dressed up as an image of perfect form. The moment I actually reached it, it would stop being that image and just become an object: finite, material, done. Desire only survives at a distance from its object.

But there's a second force at work that doesn't care about any of that. Lacan calls it the lamella, an old, formless, undying drive with no interest in beauty or completion, only in the movement of working itself. It's what makes me set one piece down and pick up the next, not because the last one satisfied anything, but because the drive doesn't stop for satisfaction. It just keeps circling.

This piece isn't a claim to have resolved that tension. It's a record of it, the shape the failure took this time. The lacquer, the joinery, the weight of the wood beneath: all of it is evidence that the work continued, not proof that it arrived.

    Design & engineering

    Every project starts as a 3D model, worked out in SolidWorks and Rhino before a single board is cut.

    Machining & joinery

    Cut and shaped on a five-axis CNC, with joinery held to the ±0.2mm tolerance marine interiors and fine furniture both demand.

  3. 03

    Finishing

    Veneered and pressed for seamless, zero-gap joins, then hand-finished and sprayed in a dedicated booth.

  4. 04

    Assembly & quality control

    Assembled and inspected in-house before anything leaves the workshop.

Design and production, under one roof.

Founded in 1987 as a family carpentry workshop, Silvan MGA moved into yacht interiors in 2017. Since then, more than 160 vessels have been fitted out in-house. Design and production have never been separated here: two decades of interior design experience sit inside the same walls as the machine floor (five-axis CNC, veneering and pressing, a dedicated finishing booth) within easy reach of the Adriatic and the yacht-refit yards across the Mediterranean.
